There are several national issues that Sierra Club is working on. Many are appropriate to our Sierra Club Group of the North Olympics and some are not so appropriate. But as we grow and develop, we will be looking for volunteers to work on these additional issues as well. Each of these national issues is briefly described. Click on each link to learn more information and learn how you can make a difference.
Beyond Coal - Coal provides about half of our electricity and more than 30% of
our global warming pollution. From the mine to the plant, to the ash pond, coal is our dirtiest energy source. It causes asthma and other health problems, destroys our mountains, and releases toxic mercury into our communities. Continuing our dependence on coal chains us to dirty energy and prevents us from making the changes we need to bring about a clean, secure energy future

has had a Clean Energy Solutions.
Clean Energy Solutions - Fixing our economy, transforming our energy future, slowing and ultimately reversing climate change and its consequences will require a clear agenda and aggressive timetable that will allow us to repower and rebuild America. This includes repowering America with green, renewable energy sources like wind, solar, tidal and other safe, clean sources of power that will energize a new America. It also includes rebuilding America with high-performance homes and buildings with smarter energy consumption and greener more efficient buildings that eliminate global warming emissions, reduce utility bills, and generate renewable
energy -

Safeguarding Communities - Protecting nature protects people. Strengthening and restoring natural defense systems such as wetlands, dunes, forests, rivers and their estuaries, barrier islands, and will reduce the effects of climate change. Here in the
Pacific Northwest, we must aware of and plan for earthquakes and tsunamis and move people and communities away from marine shorelines. We must also protect and restore natural areas that serve as the water source for human communities and natural systems. We must also convert natural hazard zones like floodplains, shorelines, landslide zones, avalanche chutes, and tsunami zones into natural areas that are free of human habitations. When extreme weather events occur there will be less property damage
and loss of life, and the natural areas will provide valuable habitat for wildlife stressed
by climate change.

Global Population - If we are to achieve a future that is sustainable, we must address the root causes of environmental degradation which includes overconsumption of natural resources, poverty, and population growth. The Global Population and Environment Program's mission is to protect the global environment and preserve natural resources
for future generations by advancing global reproductive health and sustainable development initiatives.
